How to Tutor Your Child

Private tuition is not itself a guarantee of success. There are, however, certain steps you can take that will help you get the most out of tuition. You may find out which exam board and course number applies to the subjects being taught. You can then find the syllabus and in some cases, specimen exam papers on the boards` website(s).

Find a quiet room where tuition can take place. When the student is a minor, leave the door to the room open. If this is not possible because of a noisy household, the parent or guardian should pop their head round the door once or twice during the lesson.

When a child is being taught, we recommend that homework is set. It is often the case that homework set a week before is only attempted just before the next lesson. This is very bad practice. The child far more often than not has forgotten what was taught the week before and most of the answers are wrong.

Our preferred method is that the tutor provides you with a set of answers to the homework and you make your child spend up to an hour each night, until your child gets them right. This gives the child an incentive to learn properly that which has been taught.

We allow our tutors the last 10 to 15 minutes of each lesson to set homework and the answers. After an hour of tuition the ability to concentrate deteriorates very rapidly. Therefore, when a lesson is to last more than an hour, take one or more five minute breaks, during the lesson.
