FAQ Tutors
Please, contact us if there is an answer you can`t find here.
1. How do I receive clients? After you submit the tutor registration form, your details will be placed on the Home Tutors directory straight away. However, our administrators will open your profile and run some checks (usually within 24 hours). If there are any minor errors they will correct it. If the form is poorly filled out, the account will be deactivated.
Parents and students regularly search our database for tutors through the search box on the left. They then call the tutors, and some of them also email or send an SMS with their tuition enquiry. (Tutors should respond to their queries asap otherwise they might lose interest in you.)
You can also search the Tutor Request Directory from your Tutor Admin Panel. There, you can search and contact a small number of clients who have submitted a tuition request. This facility is limited to those tutors who have purchased this feature during registration.
From time to time Home Tutors Admin will contact tutors individually if they meet the requirements of some of clients who purchase a Tutor Matching Service. Preference will be given to tutors on paid membership as opposed to the free membership we are now offering.View Tutor Request page
2. Free Tutor MembershipTutors can now register FREE and become a member with Home Tutors without any time limit. Free membership lists tutors in directory search results and gives access to the Worksheet Bank. However, parents/ students will not be able to see tutors` full profile and contact details. Only email enquiries can be received, and viewed when membership is upgraded. Free membership does not allow tutors to add additional features to their accounts, such as SMS, Bump Up Credits, Live Tutoring and Access to Tutor Request Directory.

Yes, as long as you have at least a bachelors degree. However, you must select 1 month experience as a minimum on the registration page.5. I have a PhD, does that mean I am qualified?
Unfortunately, from the point of view of Schools and Colleges, a PhD holder is not considered to be qualified. If you have a PGCE, BEd, MEd and similar, only then you are considered to be qualified.6. How old do you have to be to register? I am 18, an undergraduate, can I register as a tutor?
You must be at least 21 years of age and hold a degree to register as a tutor with Home Tutors.7. Can I have the tutees come to my home instead of me going to theirs?
Yes. However, if this is your preferred method, then please mention that in the Tutor Preference section of the Tutor Registration form.8. How do I get paid?
Tutors get paid by clients at the end of the tuition. You can arrange to get paid by cash or cheque.9. How do I pay Tax and National insurance?
All tutors who sign up with Home Tutors are self employed. It is your responsibility to pay tax and insurance contributions.10. What if my lesson gets cancelled at the last minute?
As a matter of courtesy to our teachers, Home Tutors asks clients to pay half the cost of the tuition (excluding the travel cost) if the lesson is cancelled for any reason within 48 hours. However, from experience we have realised that charging a client for a lesson that they did not have leaves bad feelings, which later leads to cancelling all the lessons altogether! Therefore, we ask tutors to decide whether to charge a client or not on a case by case basis. In general, we recommend that when a client cancels a lesson for the first time, politely tell them how this will cause you inconvenience and that normally you would charge them a cancellation fee, but as this is the first time you won`t charge them. So, when it happens the second time, then you can inform them politely that you will be charging them a cancellation fee. If the client regularly cancels lessons, whether they give you plenty of notice or not, then we would ask you to consider dropping this client.
11. What happens if a client does not pay after tuition? In the unlikely event that a client refuses to the agreed amount, we suggest that you try to resolve it in a professional and courteous manner. You may want to allow the client to pay the following week or reduce the frequency of lessons. If the clients does not want to pay you at all, then please stop all further lessons and contact Home Tutors. Please, provide us as much details as possible about the dispute, including the dates.
12. Will Home Tutors obtain a CRC (Police check) on my behalf? At present we are not obtaining CRC on behalf of our tutors.
13. Is Home Tutors an agency or an online directory? We are a tutoring agency and a directory. We provide a number of services and facilities tailored to the needs of tutors and clients.
